Shehhi was a crucial member of the Qaeda cell in Hamburg at the heart of the Sept. 11 plot. Close surveillance of Mr. Shehhi in 1999 might have led investigators to other plot leaders, including Mohammed Atta, who was Mr. Shehhi's roommate.

Resurrecting a debate over one of the 20th century's most enduring mysteries, a team of scientists is casting doubt on DNA tests that confirmed the deaths of Czar Nicholas II, the last ruler of imperial Russia, and most of his family.

In a newly released report, the scientists declare that the testing of remains found in the Ural Mountains was shoddy and flawed. They add that their own tests on the preserved finger of the sister of the czar's wife raise even more questions about the original findings.

The new report, in the Jan. 28 online edition of the Annals of Human Biology, questions the DNA findings. The authors, including geneticists from Stanford University and the Russian Academy of Sciences, allege that "major violations of standard forensic practices" took place, and they suspect that "fresh" DNA . . . contaminated the samples.

They also allege that the DNA testing produced results that were too specific for such old, decayed remains. "If you obtain results like that, they're evidence of contamination," Knight said.

Another researcher who worked on the original Romanov projects expressed amazement at the idea that the DNA from the remains could have been contaminated yet still reveal links to Prince Philip and the czar's brother.

"That is not going to happen by accident. What has to be implied here is some kind of bizarre conspiracy theory," said Tom Parsons, chief scientist of the Armed Forces DNA Identification Lab, whose office confirmed the DNA tests that linked Czar Nicholas to his brother. If the contamination came from "some random schmo," it wouldn't magically provide a link to the czar, he added.

In response, Knight insisted that he isn't accusing the researchers of working together to twist the truth. "I never dreamed that all those people got together and committed conspiracy," Knight said, although he hinted that others may have tinkered with the remains. "All sorts of people have vested interests in this thing."

Two separate accusations that Bishop Howard Hubbard had homosexual relations, including paying for sex with a 16-year-old minor, have left the leader of the Albany diocese embarrassed and humiliated. At press conferences, in public statements, and on talk radio he has steadfastly refuted both allegations, saying that he has "never had sexual relations with anyone."

But it is the death of Fr. John Minkler that has severely complicated matters for the accused bishop. Fr. Minkler, 57, was found dead in his home on Sunday, February 15. Three days before, the deceased priest was identified in a television news report as the author of a 1995 report addressed to New York’s Cardinal John J. O’Connor. Among other things, the letter detailed "a ring of homosexual Albany priests" including Bishop Howard Hubbard’s alleged long-term homosexual relationships with two younger priests.

Police won’t say how Fr. Minkler died, only that the circumstances surrounding his death are not yet clear. The coroner has yet to release his report of the autopsy.

Oklahoma prosecutors [are] dragging Timothy McVeigh's friend and convicted accomplice, Terry Nichols, back into court today: not satisfied with the life sentence he is already serving, they want to send him to the death chamber for his role in the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building.

As the trial gets under way, however, a flurry of new evidence promises to demonstrate quite the opposite of what the prosecutors are hoping to prove: that Nichols, far from being a key player in the conspiracy, was a relatively marginal figure, and that a gang of neo-Nazi bank robbers, hitherto ignored by federal and state prosecutors, had a far more prominent role.

In other words, what is intended to be an exercise in judicial "closure" for bereaved Oklahomans could end up demolishing the FBI's theory of how the worst peacetime atrocity . . .

Already, the FBI has acknowledged destroying evidence linking the bank robbers to the bombing, for reasons that have yet to be made clear. An array of colourful witnesses - including McVeigh's best friend on Death Row and the self-proclaimed ringleader of the bank robbery gang - are expected to substantiate that evidence in testimony and add details of their own.

It doesn't look like this trial will be touching on the other explosives insidce the building or the Iraqi connections to McVeigh or the Abu Sayaff connections to Nichols. But the 'aryan' angle is rife wih informants and agents provacateur as well, so this could be interesting.

Casey Nethercott, the owner of the Arizona ranch where Operation Thunderbird is ongoing, was thrown into jail on Monday 1 March 2004 on the authority of the Governor's signature alone. His civil rights have been stripped, and he is being held without bond

UPDATE: Genesis reported today that Nethercot turned himself in to the State of Arizona today after the Governor threatened to call in the National Guard to bring him in on what Alex Jones characterized as a "bogus charge in Texas."

Casey Nethercot has been told by the prosecutor that he will be arrested by order of the Governor under the Patriot Act with no charges at 2:00 PM mountain today.

Casey is a member of Ranch Rescue in Tombstone, AZ. His group helps protect ranchers and their land from the Illegal aliens, and the Mexican Military.

An assailant stabbed to death the air traffic controller who was on duty when two planes collided over southern Germany in July 2002, killing 71 people, Swiss police said on Tuesday.

The 36-year old Danish national, whose name was unavailable, was employed by Skyguide, the Swiss air traffic control in charge of monitoring parts of Germany's airspace just across the border from Switzerland.
